Get Action!
Great tune, Get Action, it's by a band called the Delgados and you should check them out. It's from their final (for now) album which felt less orchestral, more direct, and when it first came out I was printing sewerage maps for Anglian Water as a spotty early-20-something and treated myself to a CD every Friday from a local branch of MVC to cheer myself up because everything else in life felt shit. But the album, Universal Audio, was a winner, and I stumbled into it on Spotify the other day and gave it a spin whilst driving to one of my schools.
Anyway, Get Action sums up my July mood. I've got over my 'it's too hot' grump, even if it is - turns out all I needed to do was find the iced coffee function on the machine in my office. June felt a little flat; a few gigs cancelled due to poor sales, a choir show cancelled due to lack of singers, the school term feeling a bit longer than normal with the kids just wanting summer holidays. Next week looks brilliant; a reading of a new play I've been working on (number five for the year...it's because I can't sleep, so I just keep writing), rehearsal with FH, gig with FH, a reading of a new film I'm the lead in (but didn't write), hosting a dinner party...yeah, I should probably enjoy this rare downtime to reserve energy, because after next week it's all shows and then suddenly the Edinburgh Fringe and...aahhh, this year is flying by.
Not that June was quiet, as such, we ran a long workshop, played a few gigs, the Brighton shows ran in Cambridge, and then last weekend I went to the wedding of my dear friend, Alan, which was inspiring because I was surrounded by creatives who make me look lazy.
Hence: Get Action! Time to launch a radio station, submit that short film, start rehearsals with the new band, tour yet another new show in October, do the best Christmas thing ever. Work out what the rattling sound is in my new (old) car. Lots to do, but you know when your to-do list is so long and as a result you do nothing on it? Yeah, that.
